What cleaning supplies do I need for my early years setting?

This will depend on a variety of factors, such as the size and layout of your premises, the type of care you provide and the daily tasks involved in providing that care (e.g. changing nappies).
To help you write a shopping list, it can be worth segmenting your early years setting into ‘zones’. For example, play areas, eating areas, toilets and washrooms, nappy changing areas, etc. And consider what products you’d need to clean and sanitise those areas effectively. 
For most nurseries, we’d recommend buying a surface sanitiser or cleaning solution for each room or ‘zone’. It’s also a good idea to stock up on essentials such as cloths, mops, wipes, etc. – and preferably, ones that are colour-coded. Although there’s no legislative requirement to use colour-coding, it’s good practice and will help to prevent accidental cross-contamination.

Do nursery staff need to be trained to use cleaning products?

Yes – many nursery cleaning supplies include hazardous chemicals and substances. 
Therefore, by law, a risk assessment will need to be conducted. And all members of staff who use these cleaning supplies in their day-to-day role will need to be appropriately trained – particularly on COSHH. This is to ensure they’re familiar with the risks posed by the products and how they can be controlled. 
Staff should also be given access to appropriate personal protective equipment.
