According to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework, at least one first aider – with relevant paediatric first aid training – needs to be on the premises, and available at all times when children are present.
You also need to ensure this person has everything they need to respond to accidents and emergencies quickly – so investing in a couple of fully approved first aid kits is a great place to start.
For most early years settings, we recommend having at least one paediatric first aid kit – specifically for the children in your care – plus a workplace first aid kit for your staff.
These will contain a selection of all the essential first aid supplies (e.g. plasters, dressings, bandages, safety pins, etc.), ensuring you’re prepared for the most common accidents and injuries and compliant with current HSE guidelines. Extra items can then be added to the kit, depending on the specific needs of your business.
For example, cold compresses and hot and cold gel packs can be extremely useful in childcare settings. Nurseries can never have too many cleansing wipes, so it may also be worth stocking up on these. And investing in some basic first aid equipment, such as a thermometer and plastic forceps is always handy.
